Desalinated Water via Biological Means
The need to find sources of potable water that do not put further strain on existing aquifers and eco-systems is a global issue. In short, the supply of potable water is decreasing while the consumption is increasing. Rightly so, desalination is seen as the best source of new potable water supplies. However, existing commercial systems have limitations that make their large scale deployment difficult. In general, water from these sources is costlier than traditional ground water sources. This, more than anything, limits the applicability of most desalination technologies to those locations where the added cost is either tolerable, or unavoidable.
We have perfected a system that uses halophytic plants, cultivated in a controlled, semi-closed environment, to desalinate water via its natural transpiration, collected via condensation. Such a system uses no purchased energy to drive the process, is self-repairing and self-replicating, and is silent. It can produce potable water at costs comparable to traditional ground water sources, and in comparable quantities. Add to this the, arguable, attractiveness of the facilities, they can be installed at multiple locations without adversely affecting their surroundings. It is, in essence, a solar powered, reverse osmosis process.
We are occasionally asked "Why not just use solar distillation?" The answer to that is desalination, if it is to be used on a large scale, must NOT KILL MARINE LIFE. Reverse Osmosis or distillation processes produce a waste stream of water that is too hot, too salty or both as to be lethal to marine life. Complex cooling and dilution systems have to be added and if they fail there is a kill-off.
OUR PROCESS IS NATURAL. It mimics a natural mangrove forest. Seawater at ambient temperatures flows around the roots and leaves the same as it went in. It is a well known fact that many forms of marine life require mangroves to survive. We are ENHANCING THE ENVIRONMENT rather than damaging it.
The key to this is our proprietary Artificial Intelligence that constantly monitors mechanical and environmental factors to keep the system working at peak performance. However, homeostatic controls, designed into the system, assures the processor will survive even if there is a complete failure of the mechanical systems.
In many locations our processors can compete with traditional groundwater sources in cost per acre-foot.
